Here are those money saving tips from moneypit.com .

  • Tip #1 - Lock your windows. Don’t just close them, but lock them to create an airtight seal that keeps out air leaks and drafts.
  • Tip #2 – Plug power-draining computers and electronic equipment into a power strip with a switch, so they can all be easily turned off when not in use.
  • Tip #3 - Turn off lights when leaving a room.
  • Tip #4 - Get free solar heat by opening the blinds and shades on your windows during the day.
  • Tip #5 - Chill out and do your laundry in cold water.
  • Tip #6 – Add a sweater and lower the thermostat. For every degree you lower your thermostat, you may be able to save 5 percent on heating costs.
  • Tip #7 – Run only full loads in your dishwasher.
  • Tip #8 – Remove lint often from your clothes dryer and its outside vent. And, run your dryer in the evening, when the extra heat helps warm your house.
  • Tip #9 – Close the doors (and the heating vents) in rooms with minimal use, like walk-in closets, laundry rooms and guest bedrooms, to reduce heat use in those areas.
  • Tip #10 – Snuggle up under more blankets at night and turn your heat down lower to reduce energy costs.

Small things like these can add up to big energy savings in the home. You’ll be surprised to find your energy bills dropping by 20, 30 or more dollars each month when you consistently make the effort.

Making moving a little easier..  Three tips:  Protect those fragile items and use the right size boxes.  Compartmentalized ones are great for dishes.  Label the boxes; that makes it easier to put them in the right place when you get where you're going.  Maybe even code them with numbers.  And lastly, if you're renting a truck, pick it up early and get familiar with the buttons and guages - even where the gas tank is.

THE BEST TIME TO GO TO THE DMV
A new study shows that the best time to go to the Department Of Motor Vehicles is in the middle of the month, middle of the week and either mid-morning or mid-afternoon. The offices tend to be the busiest at the end of month, when people are rushing to beat expiration deadlines and when working people are most likely to happen by including Saturdays, early mornings and lunch time.

THE BEST TIME TO BUY SHOES
According to experts the best time to buy a pair of shoes is the late afternoon. The reason: Your feet will have swelled to their largest size, so you can find a shoe that isn't too tight when the later part of the day comes around.

THE BEST TIME TO RETURN ITEMS TO A STORE
At 10 a.m. on any day but the day after Christmas. Chances are the store will have just opened and the staffers responsible for accepting returns won't be as busy. They also tend to be the more senior, experienced workers.

Social media taking up too much time?  Here's 3 tips:
1.  Create a schedule; a specific time.
2.  Focus your activities on where they'll have the most impact - if you're using it to network in your job, stick to that.
3.  Keep to your purpose -  dont get side trcked by all the other information pieces it offers.  Do you really need to know that someone is harvesting cucumbers on their virtual farm?

Tuesday Sept 15

How do you know if the that warning in your email is a hoax? Here's some tips from Iolo.

To follow is a list of some common features of virus hoaxes. Think twice if you get an email message with a virus warning that:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/mamakimi/2056437398/
  • Instructs you to take immediate action and delete files or edit the registry to avoid infection. The wording is intended to rush you into taking action before you verify that it's a hoax. Alarmingly, the most common instruction is to delete a file that is required by your operating system to run properly.
  • Instructs you to forward to all of your loved ones and friends. Hoaxes of any kind are worded to play on people's desire to help others.
  • Has wording designed to alarm, with many words in ALL CAPS, a series of exclamation marks, or dramatically dire predictions of what will happen to your computer. Reputable warnings do not have such exaggerated amplifications.
  • Contains poor grammar. Many hoax creators do not natively speak the language the hoax is delivered in.
  • Contains language that sounds technical, but is in fact gibberish or a technical impossibility. Many hoaxes will use this technique to attempt to convince non-technical people that the hoax is real due to the advanced jargon. Real warnings are typically written simply and are easy to understand by even non-technical people.
  • Is part of a series of forwarded messages, and the original message is undated. Many hoaxes have been circulating in email boxes for years, but the original date is removed so that it appears new.
  • Is from an unknown source that claims to have detected a virus on your computer. This is not a valid way to learn about the security status of your computer.

Here are those job searching tips to keep from being scammed.
JOB SCAMS
Rachel Zupek, a writer for CareerBuilder.com tells us, “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.” If nothing else, this age-old adage might
be the most important piece of advice to remember in any job search, especially in today’s market. Here are things to look out for in job ads.
1. Hold tight to your cash.
No legitimate employer asks you for money. This is a foolproof tip off that something’s not right. There are a number of scams that work
this way. You deposit your money in an offshore account and wait for your investment to make you wealthy, or you purchase a list of
high-paying jobs you can do from home. Whatever the scam is, don’t fall for it.
2. Make money while you sleep!
Beware of ads that make outrageous claims, don’t specify job duties and don’t require that you send a resume. Legitimate employers
are seeking candidates with specific skills, knowledge and education. Watch for ads, even for entry level jobs, that use the phrase ‘no
experience necessary,’ especially when there is a promise of big money.
3. “Work at home” appears in the header
Work from home’ is not a job title. If it appears in the ad header, there’s a good chance it’s a come on. Scammers can rarely resist
including it in the header -- it’s the bait of their ‘hook’ as they fish for desperate people to reel in.
4. Miracles arrive in your inbox
How could this man from Romania have known you were looking for home-based work? Miracles do happen, but not via SPAM.” Move
[the e-mail] to your trash file without using the ‘remove me from this list’ link you’re likely to find at the bottom of the page. These links
are often used to confirm that your e-mail address is active and using them can result in even more SPAM.
5. Palm trees, mansions, beaches and bikinis
Successful scammers often bag their prey by dangling enticing things in front of them - much like kidnappers do.
6. Put on your detective hat
There are essentially two ways to get listed with the Better Business Bureau: Buy a membership or get reported for bad business
practices. While the absence of a company’s name in their listings is not unusual -- not every business is a paying member of the BBB
- a C, D or F rating and multiple complaints are a flashing warning signal. Be careful about ads that look legitimate and that contain the
name and Web site of well-known companies but carry a “free” e-mail address for a reply.

Today I'll try to convince my wife to start packing...normally we have a definite day to stress about leaving for trips.  This one is different.  We are waiting for the "call"; the call that says our first grandchild is on the way.  I'm ready.  Just not packed yet.  Here's a link to the best homemade icecream I've had in a while.  We had  it for Mother's Day yesterday.  www.tasteofhome.com/Recipes/Blueberry-Cheesecake-Ice-Cream  To shorten your time, just use Blueberry pie filling instead of making the sauce.  You can also dump graham cracker pie crusts in instead of mixing and baking the crumbs.  We didn't layer it in a pan, we just dumped the filling and crumbs in near the end of the freezing.

Here's some tips for avoiding the flu.
1Avoid close contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
2Stay home when you are sick.
If possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.
3Cover your mouth and nose.
Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. It may prevent those around you from getting sick.
4Clean your hands.
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs.
5Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
6Practice other good health habits.
Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.

Now for the important stuff:  How long does hand or face cream last after opening?  About 2 years according to RealSimple.com.  Personal experience:  less if you put it in one of those heating dispensers.  It took an air compressor to clean out my mother's!

The website for Mike Perham, the kid who is sailing around the world, is http://www.totallymoney.com/sailmike/www.totallymoney.com/sailmike/
Here's some energy saving tips:

Save Energy
  • Turn off appliances and lights when you leave the room.
  • Use the microwave to cook small meals. (It uses less power than an oven.)
  • Have leaky air conditioning and refrigeration systems repaired.
  • Use a programmable thermostat to save on heating and cooling costs when you're not home.
  • Insulate your home, water heater and pipes.
  • Use the ENERGY STAR program to find energy efficient products for your home. The right choices can save families about 30% ($700 a year) while reducing our emissions of greenhouse gases.
  • Replace incandescent light bulbs with ENERGY STAR qualified Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs. If every household in the U.S. replaced one light bulb with a CFL, it would prevent enough pollution to equal removing one million cars from the road.
Use Less Water
  • Don't let the water run while shaving or brushing teeth.
  • Take short showers instead of tub baths.
  • Keep drinking water in the refrigerator instead of letting the faucet run until the water is cool.
  • Scrape, rather than rinse, dishes before loading into the dishwasher; wash only full loads.
  • Wash only full loads of laundry or use the appropriate water level or load size selection on the washing machine.
  • Repair all leaks (a leaky toilet can waste 200 gallons a day).
  • Water the lawn or garden during the coolest part of the day (early morning is best).
  • Water plants differently according to what they need. Check with your local extension service or nurseries for advice.
  • Set sprinklers to water the lawn or garden only – not the street or sidewalk.
  • Use soaker hoses or trickle irrigation systems for trees and shrubs.
  • Learn how to plant trees, build a pond, compost, and more from the Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service

Slowly knead your left thumb into the palm of your right hand for 20-30 seconds. Then repeat on your left hand..

Q. What’s the best way to store books?

A.The ideal place to store books is pest-free, like an attic or a garage, as long as those spaces aren’t subject to big temperatures changes and are well ventilated. Never keep books in a humid spot; the mold that grows in damp places will damage them, along with any other paper-based objects. And don’t wrap books in plastic bags, plastic wrap, or foil, which encourage mold.

Before storing, check the surrounding areas for signs of insects or mice. Pack books in small- or medium-size boxes or plastic containers, making sure they are weatherproof and moistureproof. New boxes work best. However, you can reuse old boxes if they are clean, dry, strong, and sealable. Skip boxes that have been used for food storage; the odors and residue can attract insects and rodents. Wrap each book in a paper towel or bubble wrap to protect the surface from dirt and residue buildup. Store similar-size books together, either lying flat or standing upright, with their paper edges facing upward, which will prevent the books from warping and the pages from bending. Put the heaviest books at the bottom of the container, and pack paperbacks tightly, so they don’t fall over or collapse. Seal the boxes tightly with sturdy acid-free packing tape. Label clearly as needed. Keep the storage boxes out of direct sunlight and away from radiators or heating vents, as the increased temperature can crack bindings. Finally, place the boxes of books on a shelf, so they’re protected in case of leaks or floods.
